Meet the Sailtech Team

Peter Crockford

Peter

Peter grew up in Falmouth, and spent his childhood on the sea, learning to sail in his father's traditional working boat before moving onto more modern racing boats and dinghies. He started his career in 1986 as an apprentice sailmaker, where he learnt all the basic skills required to manufacture sails. In the early nineties he moved away to work for North Sails building high tech modern racing sails, which led to the opportunity to work at North Sails 3DL plant in Nevada, USA. Peter then enjoyed a short spell racing in the Mediteranean, before joining Doyle Sails Barbados in 1995, where he was floor manager for 6 years. Peter returned to his roots in Falmouth in 2001, where he worked for a local sailmaker, before establishing Sailtech in May 2005. Peter enjoys sailing all boats, but over the years has developed his love for classics, and is a now a regular competitor in the Falmouth Sunbeam fleet, as well as enjoying racing Tomahawk – a 50ft S&S - on the classic circuit when time permits.

Katie Smith

Katie Smith

Katie joined Sailtech as a sail and cover maker in January 2011. Katie is a photography graduate, but before joining Sailtech she spent 3 years working in the Mediterranean, including time based in Monaco and Sardinia, where she gained experience on superyachts in a variety of roles including nanny, hostess, and delivery crew. During this time she gained experience in maintenance, cleaning and repairs of sail covers and upholstery as well as general boat maintenance – something she is now putting to good use on her  110 year old 50ft classic gaff yawl which she lives aboard whilst restoring. From her time working abroad Katie is now fluent in Italian and also speaks basic French and Spanish.

Danny Leech

Danny Leech

Danny joined Sailtech as an apprentice sailmaker in June 2011. He developed his love for sailing on his family boat when he moved to Cornwall as a child. After leaving school, he spent 2 years at Falmouth Marine School where he became a qualified dinghy instructor, and is a keen competition sailor, competing in local racing as well as offshore races such as COGS and Fastnet 2011.

Danielle Burnford

Danielle Burnford

Peter’s partner Danielle helped him to set up the business in 2005, and has continued to support him since then by doing the books and attempting to keep the paperwork in some kind of order.  Danielle is a qualified Accounts Technician (AAT) and is currently studying towards professional chartered accountancy status (ACCA).  Danielle is a keen horse rider but enjoys sailing Sunbeams and other pretty boats with Peter when she has the time.
