Local teams shine in Six Metre championships
(May 23, 2011)Peter Crockford of Sailtech skippered 'New Sweden' to a creditable 4th place overall in the International Six Metre class British Open Championships last week in Falmouth.
Along with his crew Jonathan Cunliffe, Tim Bailey, Ian Causer and Johnny Saville, it was Peter's first Six Metre regatta and the team were kindly loaned 'New Sweden' by owner, class stalwart Lady Avia Willment from Universal Marina, Hamble.
Despite only sailing the boat for the first time just days before the championships, the Falmouth team clocked up results of 5, 4, 4, 4, 4, 2 to place 4th overall in the modern division. The class was won by Team Harken UK aboard 'Wildcat'.
Another Cornish team triumphed in the classic division, with Brian Pope and Andy Postle's beautifully prepared 'Titia' taking the honours ahead of French team aboard 'Dix Aout'
The event was hosted by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club and supported by sponsors Winter Rule, Savills, Harken and Sharp's Brewery. The iconic Six Metre yachts are closely related to the Twelve Metres that competed for the America's Cup for many years, and the European Championships are scheduled to be in Falmouth in 2014.
